Wifi and Telcos

Had a thought over the weekend – one reason why telco’s (like Telstra and Optus) have artificially inflated (read: bloody expensive) wifi rates might be because of the threat of voice over IP. Software like Skype seem to be getting a lot of traction lately – is it really in a telco’s best interests to provide cheap infrastructure that can be used for such applications (particularly with the confluence of wifi-enabled smart phones and voice over IP).

Had this idea while listening to an Engadget podcast interview with Bill Gates. (Found the perfect place/time for listening to podcasts – the gym.)
