Well, I made it through my first day WWF – signed my contract and had the whole induction thing first thing, with a bit more hands on in the afternoon. I was feeling a bit flat today, mostly as a result of over-doing celebrations last night, so hopefully tomorrow I will be a bit more energetic and switched on.
I learnt a lot about the organisation – they are very well organised and quite large (and growing). There are about 55 people in the office I work in, which is about 25 more than the biggest company I’ve worked for in the past. As most first days are, today was very much about learning the basics of how everything works – not very productive and a lot of information to take in. I think I remember less than half the names of the people I met today!
Right now I’m just reading through the staff manual and reading the organisation’s mission and values. It seems that WWF definitely takes the kind of approach that I like, with phrases like “seek dialogue and avoid unnecessary confrontation” in the mix. I strongly respect and admire organisations like Greenpeace that take a more aggressive stance on issues, but in terms of where I put my energy it seems WWF is a good fit for me.
The next big campaign that’s coming up is right up my alley too. I’m not sure that I can say what it is, but it’s in relation to an issue that I feel strongly about – a great first project. But I still have a lot of stuff to get through in the next few weeks before I can really sink my teeth in.
