ABC Online: Senators recommend Labor back FTA.

Labor Senator Peter Cook says the ALP should approve the deal.

“Despite our misgivings about the quality of the agreement we, on balance, believe that it is not that bad that it should be rejected,” he said.

“This deal means $53-54 million per annum to Australia,” Senator Cook added.

Seems to me that in an economy where the likes of Coles Myer post hundreds of millions in profits in a year, $53-54 million is not a significant benefit to the Australian people – especially given the associated cultural and social costs. It’s sad that Labor are not being strong on this issue. Very disappointing…
