Latham + spin

Ok – this gets my goat up – first, read the actual text of the speech that Latham gave yesterday. Now, tell me does the headline “Latham takes tougher line on migration” accurately reflect the tone of the speech? Then read the SMH article attached to the headline. From the article “Although Mr Latham did not specify what programs or policies set up to reflect multiculturalism should be changed or abolished, he did stress the importance of understanding English.” Yeh – once – in reference to our national language. So, if English isn’t our national language, what is? In all fairness – the headline will probably do Latham favours in certain circles, but it’s still a stretch…

Later, the article says: “The Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Gary Hardgrave, accused Mr Latham of failing to acknowledge how cultural diversity had strengthened Australian society.” When I read the speech I got the impression he was talking up multiculturalism – his attack was on the wedge politics of the Howard government at using ethnic divisions to win votes.

I also saw Latham interviewed on the 7.30 Report on the ABC last night (this report stems from that interview). Overall I think he did well – seems that Kerry O’Brien is still pissed with Latham, but I felt that Latham handled the questions more confidently and eloquently than any government official I’ve seen on there recently.

Still holding hope…
