PressThink: We Just Don’t Think About It: The Strange Press Mind of Leonard Downie.

“… this, I think, is what Downie [editor of the Washington Post] is saying to us with his bowls of mush: I have the power to say nothing of consequence about decisions of consequence. And the truth is… he does.”

I have often had discussions with people about the power of the media, and one point that I think I have come away with is that it is not an explicit agenda that is being played out (although sometimes it is hard to think otherwise). The Downie interview seems to support this view, however, it may be worse than it appears – if the leaders of the media don’t recognise and acknowledge their influence, we are definitely in trouble.
